Wendelin, Rudolph (1910 – 2000)
American illustrator. Hand – drawn rendering of “Smokey” measuring 4″x6″ signed with the notation “Smokey”. Professionally double – matted in rich brown tones, accompanied by a color litho – print Smokey illustration and a plate three stamps “Pledge Your Help, Prevent Forest Fires.” Wendelin is credited with the popularization in illustration – art of Smokey Bear. He was the designer of the 1964 John Muir US commemorative stamp. Wendelin enjoyed a 40 – year career with the U.S. Forest Service.
