Throughout her career her work has focused on issues of indigenous peoples of the Americas. Her singing and writing repertoire touches upon themes of love, war, religion and mysticism.
In 1997, Marie founded the Cradleboard Teaching Project, an educational curriculum devoted to better understanding Native Americans. She has won recognition and many awards and honors for both her music, work in education and social activism.
Ms. Sainte-Marie was awarded the prestigious Order of Canada. She is the recipient of a Grammy, Golden glove, BAFTA, and Juno. She also was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
