Porter attended the musical theatre program at Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School of Drama. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama and achieved fame performing on Broadway before beginning a solo singing career.
Mr. Porter won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical as Lola in Kinky Boots at the 67th Tony Awards. For the role he also won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical and Outer Critics Circle Award in the same category. Porter won the 2014 Gramma Award for Best Musical Theater Album for Kinky Boots. In 2018, he appeared in five episodes of American Horror Story in the role of Behold Chablis.
Most recently, Mr. Porter so-starred in the FX television series Pose in the role of Pray Tell. The hugely popular TV series finale was May 2021.
