PLAYFAIR, LYON (1818-1898)
First Baron Playfair. British scientist and Liberal politician who was briefly Postmaster General (1873-1874). Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Manchester Institution. Chemist to the Geological Survey and Professor in the new School of Mines. Elected to the Royal Society (1848) and, three years later, Special Commissioner and a member of the executive committee of the Great Exhibition.
ALS – Autograph Letter Signed, two and one-half pages, May 1875. Interesting content reads: I quite agree with you that there are pharmacentists quite capable of acting as good analytical chemists.
