Intellectually-brilliant pontiff: possessed three doctorates and spoke several languages. Former prefect of the Vatican Library and Papal Librarian. Along with his competent secretary of state, Pietro Gasparri, was able to settle the “Roman Question” which culminated with the Lateran Pact of 1929 and creation of Vatican City State.
DS – Document Signed, two page apostolic letter addressed to Cardinal Dennis Dougherty, archbishop of Philadelphia. Dated 24 December 1930. Accomplished in a beautiful chancery calligraphic hand and signed at the conclusion by Pius XI. Handsome and desirable example.
