CARL VAN VECHTEN (1880-1964) was a novelist, photographer, essasyist, philanthropist. A gay man, Van Vechten was a mentor to many of the Harlem Renaissance literati. He published several collections of essays relating to music, dance, and cats. Authored seven novels, including Peter Whiffle: His Life and Works, published in 1922, and Nigger Heaven, published in 1926.
