Box-office takes from Murphy’s films make him the fourth highest-grossing actor in the US. He was a regular cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1980-84 and has worked as a stand-up comedian. He was ranked #10 on Comedy Central’s list of 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time.
Mr. Murphy received Golden Glove nominations and an Academy Award Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in Dreamgirls.
Murphy was the raunchiest trickster of the ’80s, throwing the decade’s casual racism back in its face and reaping millions for his pains. Years in stand-up and on ‘Saturday Night Live’ — his characters remain the most subversive in the show’s history — cultivated his unique appeal: a humor both obsequious and in-your-face. After ’48 Hours,’ and ‘Beverly Hills Cop,’ he seemed to rule the world. But nothing’s less funny than a comic who treats his audience like subjects, and later films saw diminishing returns. Still, this is not a talent to just go away and 1992’s ‘Boomerang’ saw a maturity that blossomed with gentle hilarity in the 1996’s ‘The Nutty Professor.’ It’s a comeback more satisfying for having come out of nowhere.
