Raised in Hudson, Illinois, Hubbard met with early success as a traveling salesman with Buffalo’s Larkin Soap Company. Today he is mostly known as the founder of the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York, an influential exponent of the Arts & Crafts Movement. The Roycroft Campus Corporation was recognized by the National Historic Monuments Committee.
Among Hubbard’s many publications were nine: Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great, and the acclaimed short story A Message to Garcia. Hubbard and his second wife, Alice Moore Hubbard, died aboard the RMS Lusitania that was sunk by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland on May 7, 1915.
NOTA BENE: We also have a handsome volume of a set of 7, containing many essays by Hubbard of great artists and painters. The volume is half-calfskin with gilt titles and numerous prints. On the first free endpaper Hubbard penned a lengthy inscription to the people of Port Chester, New York. It was dated just months before his death. The volume also contains another signature of Hubbard. This particular volume was printed in the historic Roycroft Print Shop Building on the Roycroft Campus in which our autograph/book gallery is located.
