Harte was a celebrated author and poet; best remembered for his accounts of pioneering life in California.

In a career spanning more than four decades, Harte wrote poetry, plays, book reviews and magazine sketches in addition to fiction. He also lectured around the world. Harte incorporated new subjects and characters into his stories, but his Gold Rush tales have been the works most often reprinted, adapted, and admired.
