Gordimer was a Nobel Prize-winning South African novelist. She was passionately opposed to the racial injustices of the country of her birth.The author did not just hold a critical mirror up to apartheid in her fiction she also risked imprisonment as an activist in the African National Congress and she helped write her friend Nelson Mandela’s famous “I am prepared to die” speech at his trial in 1962.
