Description:Popular American stand-up and television comedian. Ed Sullivan is credited with giving Fields her break after seeing her perform at the Copacabana Club. She made numerous appearances on his weekly TV variety show. Ms. Fields was plagued with numerous health problems, diabetes being most pronounced. In 1976 she had surgery to remove a blod clot, resulting in a serious case of phlebitis. Eventually her left leg was amputated and she subsequently suffered two heart attacks. Despite the amputation, she continued to perform on stage and TV. She also had breasst cancer. Not one to throw in the towel, Ms. Fields incorporated her many health battles into her work. In the last year of her life she was voted Entertainer of the Year and Female Comedy Star of the Year by the American Guild of Variety Artists.
