Description:Italian cardinal; papal diplomat; Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary.
ANS – Autograph Note Signed, 5 January 1950, written as papal nuncio to Belgium. Addressed to an unnamed prelate. Intriguing note in which he mentions the canonization of the Bishop of Macerata, Vincenzo Strambi (1745-1824). Merits further research.
Consecrated bishop in 1922. Appointed Nuncio to Venezuela. Went on to serve as papal diplomat in Peru. Special Envoy to the inauguration of Manuel Prado y Ugarteche as President of Peru, 1939. He remained in Latin America until he was appointed nuncio to Belgium and Luxembourg. He served as Special Envoy to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Became Nuncio to Portugal the same year (1953).
Appointed Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary, 1962. One of his roles was reporting on the practice of indulgences, a report not favorably received by many of the council.
