You have done great things for my favorite cause and I appreciate your bringing this issue of the National Institute for Literacy to my attention. However, both George and I are doing our best to stay out of all policy and personnel decisions regarding our son’s administration. There are just too many requests, but more importantly, we are retired and enjoying a wonderful private life…” In her own hand she pens Paul we are truly keeping hands off – please understand. I am still working hard to combat illiteracy.

Mrs. Bush was the founder of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. She previously was the second lady of the United States from 1989-89. Among her six children are George W. Bush, the 43rd president of the United States, and Jeb Bush, the 43rd governor of Florida. She and Abigail Adams are the only two women to be the wife of one U.S. President and mother of another.
