Lyautey, General Hubert (1854 – 1934)

Price: Original price was: $125.00.Current price is: $75.00.

Description:

French Army general and Marshal of France from 1921.

ALS – Autograph Letter Signed, one page, on his 5 rue Bonaparte letterhead. Hurriedly penned in French, almost undecipherable, signed Howard. Probably responding to an invitation. Lyautey resided at the rue Bonaparte address from 1911 – 34. It is the same building in which French painter Edoard Manet was born.

From 1897 – 1902 he served on Madagascar, again under Gallieni. He played a key role in the invation of Madagascar (1896 – 98) in which he commanded the French forces. Lyautey is considered to have been an apt colonial administrator. During WWI he continued the occupation of Madagascar, regardless of the fact that France needed most of her resources in the struggle against the Central Powers. He served as France’s Minister of War for three months in 1917. In his final years, Lyautey became associated with France’s growing fascist movement, admired Italian leader Benito Mussolini and was associated with the far right Croix de Feu. In 1934, he threatened to lead the Jeunesses Patriotes to overthrow the government.
