SP – Signed Photograph: 7″x9″ black and white glossy S. Hurok Presents publicity still (circa 1965). In the left hand dark area VanCliburn has attempted to sign but then decided to sign on the cuff of his shirt adding “With best wishes.” Some faint surface smudging but, overall, very good.
Can Cliburn’s mother, a piano teacher and accomplished pianist in her own right, discovered him playing at age three, mimiking one of her students, and arranged for him to start taking lessons. He developed a rich, round tone and a singing-voice like phrasing, having been taught from the start to sign each piece. Cliburn toured domestically and overseas. He played for royalty, heads of state, and every US president from Harry Truman to Barack Obama.
