HAYES, Roland Wiltse (1887-1977)

Price: $150.00

Description:

American lyric tenor and composer, especially celebrated for his interpretation of Negro Spirituals. Critics lauded his abilities and linguistic skills demonstrated with songs in French, German and Italian.  Hayes’ predecessors as well-known African-American concert artists, including Sissieretta Jones and Marie Selika, were not recorded. Along with Marian Anderson and Paul Robeson, Hayes was one of the first to break this barrier in the classical repertoire when he recorded with Columbia in 1939. He was the subject of a biography “Angel Mo and Her Son Roland Hayes.”

ISP – Inscribed Signed Photograph:  Striking 8″x10″, matte-finish, studio portrait of Hayes with the stamp of photographer George Kossuth of Wheeling.  In white India ink, Mr. Hayes has penned:  For Arthur and Dom with best wishes from Roland Hayes, Brookline 3.9.52.  One of the finest signed images we have ever offered of Roland Hayes.

NOTA BENE:  We have a small archive of signed portraits and a program. A truly wonderful ensemble. Please inquire.
