Hubbard enjoyed early success as a traveling salesman and executive of Buffalo’s Larkin Soap Company (a firm in which, no doubt, he honed his skills for marketing).
Among Hubbard’s many publications were the 14 volume work Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great and the short publication A Message to Garcia. Hubbard and his second wife, Alice Moore Hubbard, died aboard the RMS Lusitania when it was sunk by a German submarine torpedo off the coast of Ireland on 7 May 1915. His son, Elbert Hubbard, II, attempted to continue the business through the 1930s when it ceased to operate. In the mid 1980s, thanks to public and private funding, the Roycroft Campus Corporation was established and today is a thriving historical operation in East Aurora, New York (in fact, our gallery is located there!).
