Description:American Major General of the Union Army; politician, lawyer and businessman from Massachusetts. Butler is best known as a political major general of the Union Army during the American Civil War, and for his leadership role in the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. He was a colorful and, often, controversial figure on the national stage and in Massachusetts political scene, during his one term as governor. He also served as Military Governor of New Orleans.
ALS – Autograph Letter Signed, one page, 27 May 1853. Writes to a government official (Charles H. Penske) to recommend a young man, Edward Barry of Hudson, to become a Night Inspector. Letter is accompanied by a vintage steel engraving of Butler in uniform.
