Tisserant was a widely respected academic and senior member of the Roman Curia. He also possessed a rather dominant personality. It is, perhaps, somewhat surprising that, rather humbly, he attributes his appointment to the Academie primarily due to a vacancy with the death of Cardinal Franz Ehrle, SJ., another brilliant academician.
