SUENENS, Leo-Jozef Cardinal (1904-96_
Belgium-born cardinal. Long time archbishop of Mechelen. A leading Vatican II Council Father.
SIG – Small signed card with title of office. Accompanied by a reprint image.
Created a cardinal in 1962. Military vicar of Belgium February 1962. Attended the Second Vatican Council; member of its board of presidency 1963-65. President of the Episcopal Conference of Belgium. Some rumors suggest that reform-minded cardinals voted for both Suenens and Konig in the 1963 consistory as a reminder to the electors that the pope did not have to be Italian. In this same consistory, from whence came Montini as Pope Paul VI, it was also rumored that Cardinal Siri of Bologna had, in fact, received the requisite two-thirds votes but was silenced and forced to refuse the papal throne.
