American cardinal; archbishop of Chicago; Auxiliary Bishop of New York. Created a cardinal in 1924 by Pope Pius XI.

Mundelein was a distinguished collector of historical documents, particularly of saints, bequeathed to St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, Mundelein, Illinois. He was aided in this effort by dealer-author Thomas V. Madigan.
