MERRY DEL VAL, Rafael Cardinal (1865-1930)
Italian cardinal; papal diplomat (Apostolic Delegate to Canada); papal secretary of state; author. Served as secretary to the consistory from whence came Pope St. Pius X. Two months after being proclaimed pope, Pius X made Merry del Val Pro-Secretary of State. So enamored was Pius of del Val that he proclaimed, “The good odor of Christ, lord cardinal, that you have spread in every place, even in your temporary dwelling, and the many works of charity to which you have dedicated yourself constantly in your priestly ministry, especially in this our city of Rome, have won for you, with admiration, universal esteem.” Proclaimed a Servant of God by Pope Pius XII in 1953.
LS – Letter Signed; one page, 25 September 1908, addressed to Count Louis Affre de St. Rome. Thanks the nobleman for his good wishes on the occasion of the sacerdotal anniversary of Pius X. Usual folds and light toning. Miniscule paper loss in left border, well away from writing. Overall very good.
