JOHN XXIII, Pope (1881-1963)
Born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church from 1958-63. Former Patriarch of Venice; papal nuncio in Bulgaria and France. Convened the Second Vatican Council. Declared a saint of the church by Pope Francis I in April 2014.
MS – Manuscript unsigned. Several lines in the handwriting of Roncalli as papal nuncio to France. These are instructions to his secretary in response to the request of a priest that the nunciature intervene in a matter. Likely due to diplomatic neutrality, the nuncio was unable to fulfill the request. Manuscript is accompanied by a handsome watercolor giclee portrait of John XXIII, a color giclee of his papal coat of arms, and a Vatican-issued postal first day cover commemorating his inauguration as pope. All of the items have been professionally matted in rich ecru moire fabric with under-mat of gilt paper. The ensemble is encased in TruVue museum conservation glass and an ornate, gilt wood frame.**
