BENEDICT XVI, Pope-Emeritus (1927- )
German, born Joseph Alois Ratzinger. Former professor of theology; archbishop of Munich and Freising. Proclaimed supreme pontiff in 2005. Voluntarily resigned the office of pope in 2013, making him the first such pope to abdicate the papal throne in 598 years. Now in seclusion and bears the title ‘pope emeritus’.
DS – Document Signed, 1981, just months before he left Munich and was called to Rome to serve as Prefect of the Congregation for the Faith. Document also signed by Helmut Kohl who, months later, became Chancellor of Germany. Jointly-signed sheet from the collection of a gentleman named Franz…hence, Helmut Kohl has penned “For Franz, Helmut Kohl.” Authentic autograph specimens of either man are uncommon and appearing on one sheet of paper almost unheard of. Accompanied by a color reprint image of Pope Benedict meeting with retired Chancellor Kohl and wife during a visit to Freiburg, Germany in 2012.
