Pre-WWII Vatican Statement
Perhaps in anticipation of the outbreeak of war in the fall of 1939, the Vatican through the US Apostolic Delegate, issued a “circular” letter to US cardinals, archbishops and bishops. The letter was a reiteration and clarification of a statement issued in May 1897 on the parochial affiliation of foreign-born Catholics and children of foreign-born Catholics. Our letter was issued to Cardinal Dougherty of Philadelphia, signed by then apostolic delegate (and future papal secretary of state) Amleto Cicognani. An interesting glimpse into the Church’s position on ministry to immigrants. (This letter is SOLD).
