FROM THE COURT OF KING PHILIP IV

OF CASTILE AND ARAGON

We are pleased to offer an early 17th Century manuscript dated 1645. This is a handwritten calligraphic document on vellum in vellum covers bound with yellow and red hemp cords (papal colors?). While untranslated, this 26-page document makes several references to King Philip IV of Castile and Aragon.  The introductory page includes the royal coat of arms of the House of Habsburg. There are several signatures at the conclusion of the document and a post-script of several lines. The manuscript was aquired from the Paris auction house of Charavay in the 1920s and has not been on the market since that time. It was incorrectly catalogued as being from the pontificate of Paul V (1604) but has been verified as 1645.  This may be some form of concordat between The Holy See and the Court of Philip IV or an administrative document in the name of Philip IV. There are references to Trinidad, Granada, Don Pedro Vaca de Herrera, treasurer general, as well as Don Gaspar de Robles. Given its age, the manuscript is in very good condition.  Nota bene: We are in the process of having this document translated by an expert in Palaeography.  We believe that this document may have historical importance but, as an example of early 17th century court calligraphy, it is a visually beautiful manuscript.  $ 1,695

(CLEMENT XI)  Fascinating copy of a letter from Count Rene Froulay de Tesse, French Marshall and Diplomat, Ambassador from France to the Holy See. Letter is untranslated, two sided, approximately 325 words. Penned in French and in beautiful condition. Possibly written to Clement between 1708 (when de Tesse was Ambassador to Rome) and the death of Clement in 1721. Discusses church-state relations with Austria, Spain and France. Merits further research. $ 450

Rene de Froulay Count of Tesse

1651-1725

(BENEDICT XIV)  (Lambertini) Two drafts or copies of letters, amanuensis, dictated by Pope Benedict and recorded by Canonicus Angelo Arfelli, Cameriere Segreto e. Segret. di N.S. who was with Benedict from 1736 (Bologna) until the end of his papacy. One letter dated October 1753 and the other 1755. Both letters are addressed to Joannes (Jean) Bouget (1692-1775) who spent most of his life in Rome, was a linguist of repute and professor of Hebrew at the Sacra Congregatione Urbani de Progaganda Fide. Makes references to poems...possibly written by Bouqet or translated for the pope. Some minor paper loss on one letter not affecting text. Usual folds but, overall, in very good condition.  With thanks to the distinguished dealer and author, Renato Saggiori, for his scholarship and assistance. $ 350

(BENEDICT XIV)  Papal imprint to the Society of Jesus, dated 1753, which has been signed in print by Cardinal Passioneo. Also signed by Joanne Scotti, S.J. and DeMailly, S.J. Small wax-paper blind emboss seal in bottom left.  Very good condition. $ 150

(BENEDICT XIII)  (Orsini ) Papal breve granting plenary indulgences to the faithful of Freising, Germany. Measure 15.5"x5" on vellum. Clear, crisp calligraphy in excellent condition. Benedict XIV Sends Greetings to

H.R.H. Frederick Christian, Royal Prince of Poland and Electoral Prince of Saxony,

son of Augustus II, King of Poland

(BENEDICT XIV)  Handsome papal breve on vellum; dated 26 April 1756, to Prince Frederick Christian of the House of Saxony. Accomplished in a beautiful, clear, calligraphic hand. Bears usual folds and a few fine paper breaks that do not detract from this striking document. Signed at the conclusion by Cajetanus Amatus. (Mgr. Gaetano AMATO - born in St Severino, Salerno, July 13h 1689 - served as Domestic Prelate of Benedict XIV and his Secretary to the Briefs.) The language of this document was extremely Baroque and, therefore, "flowery" and not easily translated. Nota bene: There is some confusion as to whom the Spanish cardinal was mentioned in this breve.  On 5 April 1756, Francisco Cardinal de Solis folch de Cardona was proclaimed by Benedict. There was no cardinal-archbishop for Cordoba at that time.  However, Martin Barcia Carrascal was consecrated Bishop of Cordoba on 12 January 1756 by Pope Benedict XIV. $ 475

Translation follows:

Benedict XIV to our most beloved son in Christ, greetings and apostolic benediction. Now that we have sent on his way the Cardinal of Cardoba of Spain, with his purple biretta, our beloved son, John Gaston Marcolinus, our dear chamber-servant, with our commands having been fulfilled, thinks that We should offer thanks to our august beloved son in Christ, your most illustrious and outstanding father, the Polish sovereign, and to you, our beloved son in Christ and to the whole household, and also to our beloved son, the German Michael Angel, your brother, whom he has seen again and embraces, and who has been given honors even as a youth. Therefore, my paternal love hardly overlooks this opportune occasion to greet you, beloved son in Christ,; therefore, we have diligently enjoyed him (John Gaston Marcolino?) that, finding you, offer every greeting in our name and that he amply support you in your good works with Our high regard. Your outstanding obedience to Us and to this Holy See, and your knowledgeable humanity toward all, but especially your extraordinary beneficence toward the already mentioned German, does not leave room for any doubt, but that you have not failed to heap praise on the illustrious John Gaston, and that you attend carefully to the offices by which his other German brother Mark Anthony Marcolinus/o, bears our seal of approval. To these testimonies of your kindness, you remain closely bound to Our will for you, as does the entire Marcolino household. Therefore, we refer to you all things acccepted as an opportunity (?). In assurance of which We invoke from the heart an apostolic benediction on you, our beloved son in Christ. Given at Rome in St. Mary Major, sealed with the ring of the Fisherman, on 26 April 1756, the sixteenth of our pontificate.

He was elected to the Academic Francaise in 1741, becoming coadjutor of Strasbourg a year later, then bishop in partibus of Ptolemaide in Palestine four months after that. (Partial quadrant scans)

(BENEDICT XIV) (Lambertini) Papal breve addressed to Petrus Renatus Grignon of Andeganen (France) - now defunct diocese? We could find no reference to Grignon, although he is addressed in his document as Dilecto filio. Breve makes reference too censure, excommunication. May be some form of admonition to someone in the diocese of Andeganen. Merits further research. The calligraphy on this vellum document, measure 16.5"x7.75" is clear and striking. Document dated 19 September 1741 and signed by Domenico Silvio Cardinal Passionei (1682-1761) who served as camerlengo of the church. $ 295

Signed at the conclusion by Domenico Silvio Cardinal PASSIONEI (1682-1761). Served as camerlengo of the church. Was considered a great opponent of the Society of Jesus and worked tirelessly for its suppression. He was the only cardinal whom Voltaire said he longed to become personally acquainted with. Excellent. $ 295

(CLEMENT XIV) (Ganganelli) (1704-75) Autograph Letter Signed, two pages with address panel. Penned by Giovanni Diaz Guerra (born 1726; created auditor of the Sacred Roman Rota in 1766 and probably served in some role as cameriere segreto di S. Santità). In Italian and Latin. Wrtten to the Professor Girolamo Ferri (1713-1786) of Faenza. Although we do not have Ferri's letter to Guerra, it may be assumed that he was seeking some manner of favor from the new pope as he was from the area of Faenza. Ferri was a highly respected scholar and author. Among his many celebrated works is a biography of Adriano Cardinal da Corneto. Penned just two weeks after Clement ascended the papal throne in 1769. Makes reference to the election of the new pope. Fascinating document by one of Clement's inner circle just days after his election. $ 350 (net to all).

The Guerra letter is intriguing and a bit ambiguous. Transation follows:

"Keep the money for Easter...until you find yourself certain about when you will leave and don't take it with you, nor will you be informed ahead of time, since this 'blessed' woman shows herself to be fickle. In order to appeal to the enemies a truce has been called, and as long as they don't make any other moves, I think I will postpone everything. Anyhow, I thank you for your kind heart which you have shown to me and at a better time we will discuss the matter.

"The brother departs tomorrow for Sogliano who will diligently ensure that the other inscriptions are provided of which you spoke. The election of the new Pope has proven to be generally agreeable, and it is believed also to please the princes across the mountains as it was hoped. I hope that He remembers you and your affairs since it is said that He much considers men of letters. You will see in this occasion of the election, if yo uhave a chance to come, either by means of a letter or by inscription. In Rimini they are doing great things to celebrate this occasion and want in all ways for the event to be theirs, because He was born in Sant' Angelo and because He wrote to the nobles of Rimini since he had been a cardinal. The people of Urbanti want him for themselves because he is a native of Sant'Angelo. We shall see who wins out. In the meantime, the people of Rimini have planned a three day celebration: fireworks, illumination of the public papalce and even some private residences. They have sent four deputies to Fabbri di Verucchio, the nephew from the Pope's sister and say that they want to send four more to Rome. On the whole they do it up big. In themeantime, I have transcribed for you the inscription posted in the cathedral on the occasion of the Triduum which is said to have been written by Doctor Bianchi."

(Inscription on reverse follows)

"Bishop Francisco de Castillanis, overseer of the Canons of the Divine Dove and the College of the Holy Church of Rimini, in the three day festival, solemnly applaud Pope Clement XIV Ganganelli, distinguished citizen of Rimini, and patron of the arts, who has happily and fortunately been elected and raised up to the great pontificate. Dated June 2nd and the following days, 1769."

"Your most devoted friend, (signed) D. Guerra."

This is the granting of such privilege. Dated 18 June 1795 and signed by Romuald Cardinal Braschi-Onesti (1753-1817) who served, for one year, as Camlerlengo of the College of Cardinals (1800-1801). Pius VII Endorsement

(1829-40)

to Giovanni Francesco Cardinal Falzacappa,

Prefect of the Apostolic Signature

PIUS VII (Pope from 1800-23) (Count Barnaba Niccolo Maria Luigi CHIARAMONTI).  Document dated 1818 , one page, to the attention of Giovanni Francesco Cardinal Falzacappa, Prefect of the Apostolic Signature (1829-40). Makes reference to the recent death of Alessandro Cardinal Lante Montefeltro Della Rovere (1818) and the appointment of an abbot for St. Peter and Paul (a monastery?) The year before this was prepared, Pius suffered a fall which left him feeble. Nevertheless, he reigned for five more years.  The same year of this document a concordat was reached establishing a greater church presence in Poland. Diplomatic relations with the court of England and the Holy See were also strengthened. Not signed with the formal Pius PP VII, but a variant of his handwritten signature on verso. In the hand of a secretary is penned: "To the attention of our Sir, Pope Pius VII. The pope has penned: Al Card. E Pro-Datario che ne parli – “to the cardinal pro-datarius in order that he speak with me concerning this matter.” (Authentication by distinguished dealer-author Renato Saggiori). POPE ST. PIUS X

Oversized Formal Portrait

(PIUS X, POPE SAINT) (1835-1914) Born Giuseppe Melchiorre SARTO. He was the 258th pope of the Catholic Church, serving from 1903-14. Pius was the first pope since Pius V (1566-72) to be canonised. He codified Catholic doctrines to inspire conformity in the church and rejected modernism. His most important reform codified church law in a central fashion. Pius was a pastoral pope, encouraging personal piety and a lifestyle of poverty and austerity. He combined within himself a strong sense of compassion, benevolence and poverty but also stubborness and a certain stiffness.  He wanted to be a pastor and was the only pope in the 20th century who gave Sunday sermons every week. His charity was extraordinary, filling the Vatican with refugees from the 1908 Messina earthquake, long before the Italian government began to act. He rejected every manner of favor for his family. He often referred to his own humble origins, taking up the causes of the poor. "I was born poor, I have lived poor, and I wish to die poor." Considered a holy person by millions, public veneration of Pius began soon after his death. Extraordinary black and white litho print, full-length, formal portrait of Pius X, printed on heavystock board. The image measures nearly 18'x27". Given its size and quality, it is likely that the portrait was only distributed to major Catholic institutions for public display. It was published during Pius X's lifetime by Hel. de L'Instituto Italiano D'arti Grafiche Editeur A. Begame (Italie). There is a series notation of 2104. Below the formal portrait is a two line blessing in Italian with the Pope's signature (litho print, not original).  While this is not an authentically-signed original, the size and quality of this official portrait is exemplary. A highly uncommon and desirable addition to any papal collection.

$ 375  (Due to size a nominal additional sum will be charged for special preparation in the shipment of this portrait.  Please inquire.)

d'ELCI, RAINIERO CARDINAL (1671-1761) Italian cardinal. Entered papal service in 1700 and held several offices both in the Roman Curia and the papal territorial administrator.  Served as Inquisitor of Malta from 1711-1716. Consecrated titular archbishop of Rodi in 1730.  Served as apostolic nuncio in France from 1731-38. Pope Clement XII created d'Elci a cardinal on December 20, 1737, but did not publish it until the following June. That same year, d'Elci was named archbishop of Ferrara an office he held until 1740; he was then legate in that city. In 1747, d'Elci was transferred to the see of Sabina then Porto e Santa Rufina.  He became Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals upon the death of Pietro Luigi Cardinal Carafa on December 15, 1755 and, as such was transferred to the see of Ostia e Velletri (property of the dean). Presided over the papal conclave of 1758. In spite of his then advanced age, he received several votes during the conclave.  He is buried in Santa Sabina, Rome. Autograph Letter Signed, 30 December 1747, one page. One half of the letter is written by Marchese Torrigiani and the remaining seven lines in the hand of Cardinal d'Elci. Intriguing Three Page Manuscript

of Scottish-Italian Papal Diplomat

to the Court of King George III

(Image for Illustrative Purposes Only)

ERSKINE, CHARLES CARDINAL (1739-1811) Italian-Scottish papal diplomat and cardinal. The son of the Earls of Kellie and Mar, Scotland. he was educated by Cardinal Henry, Duke of york, at the Scots College, Rome, and was afterwards a successful advocate, becoming Doctor of Laws in 1770. Pope Pius VI made him pro-auditor and Promoter of the Faith in 1782, also a domestic prelate, canon of St. peter's, and dean of the college of consistorial advocates.  In 1793, Erskine was sent as papal envoy to England. by his tact erskine established excellent relations with the Court and the ministry, diminished the dissensions among Catholics, and avoided stirring up any anti-Catholic demonstration.  During his stay in London, Erskine was named auditor by the pope and, in 1795, was awarded additional powers as envoy extraordinary.  He left London in 1801 and returned to Rome where, in January 1803, he was created a cardinal. As a member of the Propaganda he was still useful to English Catholics and was made protector of Scotland. On the French invasion of Rome in 1808, Erskine was made pro-secretary of Briefs, and was shut up in the Quirinal Palace with the pope. Nota bene: Cardinal Erskine was the principal orator at the funeral of Pius VI.

This letter cites the year 1808 at the apex of the conflict between Napoleon and the Holy See. Cardinal Erskine also references Stefano Cardinal Borgia who was the prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. During the French invasion of Rome (1797-98) Cardinal Borgia also was arrested but quickly released. From the time Pius sent Erskine to England as envoy, until his death, Erskine and Cardinal Borgia maintained close ties. Borgia oversaw missionary efforts and Erskine was a kind of auditore for the missions while an envoy. There is much historical correspondence between Erskine and Borgia while the former was in England and through the time he departed the court of St. James, through Paris, where he met Napoleon and members of his cabinet, on the way to Rome to accept his red hat. ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: When Pius VII was taken prisoner, Erskine was allowed to go free, but his property was now seized and he would have been reduced to beggary if his Protestant relations had not made him an allowance.  In 1809 Napoleon ordered Erskine to Paris and though ill, he was forced from Rome in 1809.  Shortly after his arrival in Paris, Erskine fell into a gradual decline and soon died.  He was buried in the church of Saint-Genevieve, now the Pantheon.

This letter is written in Italian but not signed by Erskine. Possibly a page is missing. Three pages, written between 1808-11. Addressed to an Illustrious Gentleman (layman). Business letter from the cardinal concerning a debt owed on the rent of a house, and refusing a request to lower the rent. The person (unnamed) renting the house misunderstood the fee, but the amount was established by Cardinal Borgia and the Congregation for the Faith. Erskine apologizes for the misunderstanding while reiterating that the rent cannot be changed.  He offers his blessings and hopes to remain in good standing with the tenant.Manuscript is accompanied by a contemporary reprint of Anglo-Roman Papers, 1890, by William Maziere Brady. This interesting little volume includes Memoirs of Cardinal Erskine, Papal Envoy to the Court of George III.  $ 225

PACCA, BARTOLOMMEO CARDINAL (1756-1844). Educated at the Accademia de Nobili Ecclesiastici. Appointed nuncio to Cologne by Pius VI. He went on to become a titular archbishop in 1786. Four years later Pacca was sent on a secret mission to the Diet of Frankfort to safeguard the interests of the Holy See. In 1794, he was appointed nuncio to Portugal. While in Lisbon, Pacca was created a cardinal and assigned to various Roman congregations. In 1808, French troops were stationed in Rome. Yielding to the insistence of Napoleon, Pius VII “sacrificed” Cardinal Consalvi, his faithful secretary of state, as well as the pro-secretaries Casoni, Doria and Gabrielli.  Shortly thereafter, the pope named Pacca to serve as pro-secretary of state. Pacca, the consummate diplomat, avoided everything that might provoke the wrath of Napoleon, even to the point of ignoring the excesses of the French military stationed in and around Rome. Despite such efforts on the part of Pacca, he became persona non grata with the French military who threatened him with dismissal from Rome. Realizing that the annexation of Rome was inevitable, Pacca took precautions to prevent a sudden attack on the Quirinal Palace and advised calm and quiet.  The bull of excommunication against Napoleon had been prepared in 1806 to be published in the event of annexation. On June 10, 1809 when the change of government actually took place, the bull was promulgated. Shortly thereafter, the Quirinal was attacked, the pope arrested and taken to France and then to Savona. Pacca was among those who accompanied the pope. While an intimate of the pontiff, the French demanded the confinement of Pacca who was confined to Fenestrelle. He had few opportunities to communicate with the pope or other members of the curia. Eventually, in 1813, Pacca was informed that, in view of the concordat between the pope and Napoleon at Fontainebleau, he was free to join the pope.  Napoleon had long objected to the liberation of Pacca, declaring “Pacca is my enemy.”  He eventually was dispatched to Sinigaglia and accompanied the pope back to Rome.  That same year, 1814, Pacca was named cardinal camerlengo.  The remainder of Pacca’s life was devoted to affairs of various congregations and the administration of the suburbicarian sees.  Leo XII appointed him pro-datary, making him the first to hold the post of cardinal legate of Velletri. Cardinal Pacca’s residence was frequented by the most illustrious of scientists, men of letters and artists, both Roman and foreign. He encouraged historical excavations in Ostia at his own expense and with objects found formed a small museum in his vineyard on the Via Aurelia (casino of Pius V). Letter Signed,  1829, granting an annual pension to a priest. Written in Italian. Letter is in very good to fine condition and bears the wax seal of Cardinal Pacca. $ 150

The first major confrontation between the church and the state occurred during the presidency of Benito Juárez (1855-72). The 1855 Juárez Law drastically reduced traditional ecclesiastical privileges. On March 11, 1857, a new constitution was adopted that denied all ecclesiastical entities the right to own real estate and abolished most remaining ecclesiastical privileges. On July 12, 1857, Juárez confiscated all church properties, suppressed all religious orders, and empowered the state governors to designate what buildings could be used for religious services. Mexico's first religious civil war was fought between 1857 and 1860 in reaction to the legislation This letter may be a restating of the the Holy See’s rights with respect to the clergy and faithful of Spain.  Merits further research. $ 175

POPE PIUS XII

Eugenio Pacelli

(1876-1958)

VATICAN CITY STATE - 19 December 2009 - According to sources within the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI will, shortly, declare Pope Pius XII venerable, a step in the process of canonization.  Despite objections from some Jewish groups which insist that the Vatican open WWII secret archives which are presently closed beyond 1939, it is felt that there exists compelling evidence that Pius exhibited "behind the scenes heroism" during the war. Pope Benedict also declared that his predecessor, John Paul II, will also be declared venerable although he has been dead less than four years.

Stunningly beautiful calligraphy and water-color on parchment apostolic benediction from Pius XII, dated 1950 (Holy Year). Granted upon Furey Ellis, a well-known Philadelphia insurance executive and philanthropist. Ellis was instrumental in the promotion of the Italian-American Congress.  A stadium was erected in Philadelphia bearing his name. Other than some minor loss of water color pigment in small areas, the overall condition of this illuminated manuscript is very good. Accomplished in tones of burgundy, azure blue and gold. Bears the coat of arms of Pius XII at the top.  An amazing iluminated document. Overall measurement of this document is 10.5"x15". $ 950

Fourteen years before this papal blessing was granted, Mr. Ellis was appointed a Supernumerary Confidential Gentleman of Sword and Cape in the court of Pius XII -- serving, essentially, as a civilian counsellor to the pope and the Vatican.

It long has been our policy to not render judgment on the individuals whose autograph material we sell.  Nevertheless, we feel that history and time will exonerate Pius XII. Were the Vatican Secret Archives to change their policy on the release of contemporary historical material, it is quite possible that the record books would be rewritten in favor of Pius XII. Through his direct intercession, and that of many courageous clergy and laity in the Vatican, nearly one million Jews were given safe harbor during the War. Quiet diplomacy has its merits.

LEO XIII (1810-1903) Count Vincenzo Gioacchino Cardinal Raffaele Luigi Pecci. The 257th pope of the Roman Catholic Church who reigned from 1878-1903. At the time of his death at age 93, Leo had reigned for 25 years.  Leo XIII's administration was marked by diligence, transparency and a more moderate approach to papal governance than that of his predecessor, Blessed Pope Pius IX.  Leo was widely acknowledged to be a brilliant scholar-diplomat. Manuscript addressed to Monsignor Giuseppe Ferrari, Rome, dated 12 April 1858. (Ferrari --1811-1870 -- was Minister of Finances under Pius IX from 1854 until his death in 1870). Although not signed by Leo XIII, the document bears several lines of Leo's handwriting as archbishop of Perugia. Draft letter contains some interesting commentary on defrauding of pontifical finances. Merits further research. Accompanied by a superb steel engraving circa 1878. $ 250

Florence 1616 (Ephemera)

We offer what appears to be some manner of official governmental broadside issued by the government of Florence. The broadside refers to a senate order of 25 April 1616 and seems to establish the rate of currency for certain regions. There are images of Jesus Christ on both sides of the document with some heraldic crest in the center with a coronet, thus indicating a ruling principality. The document bears staining and some creasing, is missing a wax seal, and there is a faint signature at the bottom Pierfrancesco Bucciano del officiale. $ 175

MANNING, Henry Edward Cardinal (1808-92) Celebrated convert from the Church of England to Catholicism; went on to become Archbishop of Westminster. Believe to be written to William Henry Smith (1825-1891) twice Secretary of State for War and, later, First Lord of the Treasury and Leader of the House of Commons.  Letter reads:  "My dear Mr. Smith -- Many thanks for your letter and the memorial of Bp. Moberly.  I am glad to send you another copy. If I reprint it you shall have more if you like.  We ought to pray for this election, for our Christian Schools will be the first attack.  Believe me always, Very faithfully yours, Henry E. Card. Manning." Cardinal Manning refernces george Moberly (1803-85), English divine who was educated at Winchester and Balliol College, Oxford. he was called to be Bishop of Salisbury in 1968 in which he kept up the tradition of his predecessors, Bishops Hamilton and Denison, his chief addition being the summoning of a diocesan synod.  Though Moberly left Oxford at the beginning of the Oxford Movement, he fell under its influence: the more so that at Winchester he formed a most intimate friendship with Keble, spending several weeks every year at Otterbourne, the next Parish to ursley. Bishop Moberly nevertheless retained his independence of thought and, in 1872, astonished his High Church friends by joining in the movement for the disuse of the damnatory clauses in the Athanasian Creed.  His chief contribution to theology is his Bampton lectures of 1868. Fascinating letter with interesting association to William Smith and Bishop Moberly and the tenuous state of affairs at the time.  $ 175
