Cardinalatial

(09-20-2008) IT IS ENCOURAGING TO NOTE that letters of popes have enjoyed increased interest as evidenced by recent auction records. In the past couple of years Heritage Galleries/Dallas has marked the sale of ALS, LS and DS material of popes: Innocent X - $1,925; Paul III - $4,500; Clement VIII - $1,673; Paul V - $4,200; Sixtus V - $1,700; and an astonishing $15,400 for a letter of Pope Urban VIII. More recently, Swann Galleries have sold the following papal documents: Adrian VI L.S. $2,500; Marcellus II, L.S. $3,750; Paul III L.S. $2,500. Currently, one auction house is selling a 5x7 color signed photograph of the late Pope John Paul I, (reigned for 33 days) with an auction estimate of $3-5,000.

WEEKES AUTOGRAPHS was privileged, recently, to negotiate the sale of an important collection of letters and other memorabilia for a European client. The extensive collection consisted of letters, documents and signed photographs of cardinals and other prelates of the Roman Catholic Church. This unique and choice assemblage was acquired by an American who has one of the most extensive of such collections of cardinalatial material in the world.

PAUL V (1552-1621)     (Born Camillo Borghese)

Papal bull in calligraphic Latin with historiated initials, untranslated. Dated 1612. Lacks hemp strings and seal but, otherwise, a document in extremely good condition given its age. Several curial officials have signed at the bottom. Merits further research.  $ 450

STELLAR SIGNED STUDIO PORTRAIT

Future American-Cardinal Saint?

COOKE, Terence J. Cardinal, (1921 - 1983) American cardinal, the tenth bishop (seventh archbishop) of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of New York. He was born in New York, entered St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie in 1940 and was ordained a priest on December 1, 1945. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of New York on September 15, 1965, and ordained a bishop on December 13, 1965 with the titular see of Summa. He was appointed Archbishop of New York on March 2, 1968 and appointed Archbishop for the Military Services on April 4, 1968. He was elevated to Cardinal on April 28, 1969, and served as archbishop until his death from cancer. He is interred in the crypt under the altar of St. Patrick's Cathedral. In 1988, he was posthumously awarded the F. Sadlier Dinger Award by William H. Sadlier, Inc. for his outstanding contributions to the ministry of religious education in America. Cardinal Cooke quietly endured great physical suffering in his final years, known only to his closest advisers. He was widely regarded as a holy person during his episcopal ministry as archbishop; the cause for his canonization is under way. As of 1992, he is now a "servant of God". Striking 8”x10” Conroy color litho print formal portrait of His Eminence, which is nicely signed in peacock blue ink on the lower white mount. Other than minor corner creases, (would mat out) the photograph is magnificent and uncommon in this form.  $ 150

COOKE, Terence Cardinal - We also have a fine signature penned in peacock blue fountain pen ink on a small card. Room for matting.  $ 50

CICOGNANI, Amleto G. Cardinal - (1883-1973) Longtime papal secretary of state and Dean of the College of Caridnals. Fine bold signature with paraph on a small card. Room for matting. $ 35

He was considered a great authority on St. Thomas and his works. Internationally-recognized for his travels and lectures, he was highly regarded in the U.S., and a long time friend of James Cardinal Gibbons. Cardstock measuring 5.5”x3.5” dated 13 February 1907, penned in Latin:  Benedicant te omnipotens Deus, Pater et Filius et Spiritus Santus. D. Card. Mercier, Arch. Mechlin. There is generalized foxing on the card and a small image of Mercier has been affixed in the upper left. Writing is dark and clear. $ 45

TISSERANT, Eugene Cardinal - (1884-1972) Former Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals. Signature and dedication on a small card which he has dated. Room for matting. As opposed to many other curial cardinals, Tisserant was not as compliant in granting his autograph.  He was, in general, formidable fellow with a great mane of a beard. A man of singular brilliance: linguist, theologian, administrator. $ 35

Revealing letter from "the world's cardinal"

CUSHING, Richard J. Cardinal - Longtime archbishop of Boston. Typewritten Letter Signed, one page, 1967. Atypical letter revealing Cushing's warmhearted, witty manner. In part reads:  "I would like to send you a longer letter but I have been in the hospital in recent days to have teeth extracted. I was only there for a few days but I think the pains and aches resulting from the dental surgery will be with me a long time. At the present time I am in misery trying to wear false teeth. I am confident, however, that if I am true to them they will not be false to me..." This revealing letter is accompanied by an original black and white newswire glossy photograph of Cushing extending his hand for a little girl to kiss. The Cushing photo is a print of the now famous "Homage from a Child" photograph that appeared in TIME and Saturday Evening Post. A charming pair that would be ideal for display.  $ 145 (Payment Options)

A visionary leader of the second Vatican Council and was one of few prelates to deliver the closing messages of the Council. For his international humanitarianism, Leger was accorded the Companion of the Order of Canada and the National Order of Quebec.  In 1979, Leger was awarded the first Pearson Medal of Peace. Superb oversized calling card bearing Leger’s heraldic crest which has been very boldly signed in blue fountain pen with his title of office as archeveque de Montreal. In fine condition. A scarce signature especially from this era. We will include a copy of the profile written on Cardinal Leger (nice association piece). $100 (Payment Options)

O’CONNELL, William Henry Cardinal  (1859-1944)

Longtime archbishop of Boston and its first cardinal. Vintage 9”x7.5” sepia tone glossy photograph, 1926, being a Wide World newsphoto.  O’Connell is seated with the Marquis Ferrante, Italian Consul in Boston, on the occasion of his being presented the Decoration of the Grand Cross of the Crown of Italy. This honor coincided with the jubilee of his episcopacy. (While a stalwart, tough-minded prelate, O’Connell’s career was somewhat tarnished by the appointment of a nephew to become the chancellor of the archdiocese. It was later learned that the nephew was secretly married! Tres scandalous in the 1920s!!). Photo in very good condition. $40 (Payment Options)

Professionally double-matted and framed along with a handsome black and white, litho print portrait of Dr. Schweitzer as well as a postal first day commemorative cover, 1975, noting the centennial of Schweitzer’s birth.
